National Family Literacy Month is celebrated in the United States during the month of November. It was established in 1994 by the National Center for Families Learning (NCFL) to raise awareness of the importance of family literacy and to promote family literacy programs.

History

The NCFL was founded in 1989 to help families learn together. The organisation recognized that family literacy is essential for children's success in school and in life. When parents and caregivers read to their children, they help them develop a love of reading and learning. They also help them develop the essential literacy skills they need to succeed in school and beyond.

In 1994, the NCFL worked with Congress to designate November as National Family Literacy Month. The goal of the month is to encourage families to make literacy a priority in their homes. The NCFL provides a variety of resources to help families celebrate National Family Literacy Month, including a calendar of activities and a list of suggested books to read.

How to Celebrate

There are many ways to celebrate National Family Literacy Month. Here are a few ideas:

  • Read together as a family. This could be a storybook, a magazine article, or even a comic book. The important thing is to spend time together and enjoy reading.

  • Visit your local library. Libraries offer a wide variety of books and other resources for families. You can also find storytime programs and other events for children of all ages.

  • Start a family book club. This is a great way to get everyone excited about reading. You can choose a book to read together and then discuss it as a family.

  • Write together. Encourage your children to write stories, poems, or even letters. You can also write together as a family. This is a great way to express yourself and to bond with each other.

  • Play literacy games. There are many fun games that can help children develop their literacy skills. You can find games online or at your local library.

No matter how you choose to celebrate, National Family Literacy Month is a great opportunity to emphasise the importance of literacy in your family.

Leverage this holiday to grow your business

Business leaders and entrepreneurs can leverage National Family Literacy Month to market and grow their businesses in a number of ways. Here are a few ideas:

  • Offer discounts or promotions on products or services that are related to family literacy. For example, a bookstore could offer a discount on children's books or a tutoring company could offer a free consultation.

  • Host events or workshops that promote family literacy. For example, a library could host a storytime program or a children's museum could host a workshop on early literacy skills.

  • Partner with other businesses or organisations to promote family literacy. For example, a bookstore could partner with a local school to host a reading fair or a tutoring company could partner with a community centre to offer free literacy classes.

  • Create educational content about family literacy. This could include blog posts, social media posts, or even videos.

  • Donate to or sponsor family literacy organisations. This is a great way to show your support for family literacy and to reach a large audience of potential customers.
